THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T - combine patterns that are just not meant to be together.
if you look at the image above, it’s screaming, WRONG PATTERN COMBO
I mean, argile sweater vest is classic and would always have its special place in my heart, but to pair it up with a medium-stripped long sleeve shirt with a strong and bold color that matches a color from the sweater is a big NO NO.
If you have a basic eye for fashion, you can clearly see how distracting this is — the ARGILE sweater is very LOUD already, and to have the green stripped long sleeve as well it just TOO MUCH — like they say “IF SOMETHING TALKS, LET THE OTHERS WALK”
the sweater is a main focus already and its making a statement on its own, you don’t need a loud long sleeve to clash the whole look, not to mention how it distracts the observer’s eyes.
I am not saying ARGILE & STRIPES don’t go together. The basic key when combining patterns are
*pick the right color — get something that would stand out, and let the other color be a background
*pattern and print sizes, make sure they don’t overpower each other, if you pic a big bold pattern — match it with a smaller pattern, silent and more set back.
*if not sure, fall back on throwing a plain colored piece to act as a neutralizer and can tie all the patterns together.
*overall look, sometimes even following the rule can get you a not-so-good combination, always trust your instinct
*pulling it off = confidence
= check out ETRO MILANO , an Italian fashion house by Kean Etro, they often use wild patterns (esp paisley) to create a masterpiece.

how bout this from GUCCI

notice how MANY patterns are there in an outfit, but the look manages to break it down into pieces to show you YOU CAN PLAY with patterns and colors, and that you don’t have to be scared.
Other designer who most likely to be experimenting with patterns are, LANVIN and John Galliano
here’s more example

stripped long sleeve and a floral printed silky scarf wrapped around the neck to look like a collar.

prince of wales patterned shirt with a vintage floral textured tie.

*notice how the scarf is the main focus when you first look at the whole picture, the shirt and the coat serves as a background, still interesting yet not over powering the scarf, the plaid belt is a lil more set back compare to the shirt which adds a bit of detail — also it serves as a bridge between the shirt and the dark denim jeans, accenting the contrast between light and dark.

same idea goes to this one; scarf being the main focus, and having the jacket, shirt and belt lying on the background, supporting the whole look.
I see FAR WAY too many mismatched patterns around Vancouver and it’s sickening. I hope this article helps. I am NO fashion guru whatsoever, but I believe I have enough graphic and fashion sense to make this article worth a while, this is all written from my personal point of view so you are not forced to believe what I say
